Jonathan Curtis

Headteacher

I have been Headteacher since September 2018, I was previously the Deputy Headteacher since Jan 2015.

My background and training is as a PE Specialist working initially in mainstream PE moving over to an emphasis on students with additional needs through exposure to the School Sports Coordinator role that saw me teach in all Special settings a PRUs in Stockport while based at Heaton School. After this I became the PE lead teacher at Piper Hill Specialist Support School in Manchester before securing the Deputy Head position here at this amazing school.

My experience in a number of school settings enables me to bring a fresh approach to an already outstanding school at an exciting time in the development of Heaton School.

Out of school I enjoy spending time with my wife and 2 sons. I’m a real sports enthusiast and enjoy, running, playing and coaching Hockey, coaching Football at Stockport County Colts and watching Manchester City F.C.

Health and Safety Governor

Member of Resources Committee

Full voting rights
I have served as a governor at Heaton School since 2010. I have been associated with the school since 2008 when my daughter joined as a pupil. She has now left and attends a residential specialist college. This has given me immense insight to the challenges Heaton’s  pupils face. I also held the position of Chair of the PTA at my daughter’s primary school.

I am a retired registered general nurse with midwifery, occupational health and safety training. I spent the first years of my career in hospital settings and then the latter as an Occupational Health  Adviser for the BBC covering the North Of England. I was part of the Health and Safety Committee and managed my own department including recruitment and budgeting. I have subsequently worked as an independent adviser for various organisations.

I bring to the governing body my skills and experience in Health and Safety, recruitment, budget setting and monitoring and post school opportunities and provision.

I am married to a local GP and we have 4 children and three grandchildren between us.

I have been a parent governor since March 2020 and my daughter has attended the Heaton School for the last 7 years and thoroughly relishes every day she spends there. I currently work as an Operations Manager for the British Red Cross across the North of England and previously served with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service for 31 years.
I applied for the role as I wanted to be able to support the school continue to deliver high quality learning for all that attend whilst supporting the staff team in their work by bringing previous and current work experience to the role.
