Destinations Post 19

At Heaton School, staff work closely with parents and carers alongside other professionals to ensure that the transition from school to post 19 provision is as smooth and successful for each young person as is possible. Our young people at Heaton School may choose to transition into a range of options once leaving school including further learning or supported work, supported living and/or personalised day services.

Conversations regarding Year 14 transition will start in earnest once a young person starts year 12 (post 16) at Heaton School. We do however encourage a general conversation around each students (and families/carers) views and aspirations from year 7 as we strongly feel these conversations help support our students journey through education.

The annual EHCP review meeting is the ideal time to introduce and discuss ideas around what is on offer for each young person once they leave school in alignment with their needs and aspirations.

If looking at the option of further learning at a college, we encourage parents and carers to start looking in earnest at the local options at the start of year 13, completing visits/tours, attendance at open days as well as starting to make applications. Further conversations and discussion will be had at the year 13 annual review with the local authority attending the review in year 14 to start making the necessary changes to each students EHCP ready for transition.

Over recent years, our leavers have transitioned very successfully to a number of colleges.

  • Cheadle College; Choices Course and Supported Internships
  • Seashell College
  • David Lewis College
  • Bridge College
  • Aquinas College - Pathways offer

Over the last few years, Pure Innovations have opened and expanded on their own college provision in the centre of Stockport offering educational programmes to develop future life skills and employability skills for young people with an EHCP. Details can be found on their website.

Cheadle College and Aquinas College are encouraged to be the first destinations for most students if they can meet the individual students needs. If local colleges cannot meet the need, then independent providers will assess students.
