Admissions
Heaton School is Stockport’s Secondary Special School for young people with Severe Learning Difficulties, Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties, Autism and/or Complex Medical Needs.
Our students are aged 11 – 19 years. All of our students have either a Statement of SEN or and Education Health Care Plan (EHC). Parental and carer involvement in the process of writing and updating Statements and EHCs is essential.
These documents summarise a young person’s needs and names Heaton School if we are the school that can best meet these needs. At Heaton we provide pupils with the opportunity to make progress at their own pace using the engaging topics from National Curriculum to work on holistic outcomes: health; friendships and wellbeing, independence, work skills, and independent living skills.
Young people are assessed for a place at Heaton School by education professionals such as Educational Psychologists in close consultation with parents and carers. Places are decided by Stockport SEN and a panel sits in the Autumn Term each year for the following year’s year 6s (for a school place) and 12s (for our Post 16 department).
For a place at Heaton School the panel will consider children young people with the any of the needs listed above and whether the child or young person needs to be taught in smaller groups, with higher staffing levels and with specialist teaching methods.
The vast majority of our students come to us from another specialist setting, either a primary special school, a resourced unit within a mainstream school, or they have had specialist support to access a mainstream school.
If your child has Special Educational Needs, the current school will advise you to start looking at secondary schools during year 5, or year 10 if you are looking for a Post 16 place, ready for a review meeting about your child in the autumn of year 6 or year 11.
If Heaton is the school that can best meet your child’s needs, it will be confirmed at this meeting and written into an updated statement or EHC plan.
If you are looking for a school place outside of usual transition years (i.e. joining in years other than 7 or 12), please contact our Reviewing Officer at Stockport SEN, Jo Holmes, on 474 2525, or the Headteacher , Jonathan Curtis on the school number or email.
