Another fantastic (busy) week at Heaton school!

On Wednesday we were thrilled to have Lynn Perry (Head of school effectiveness for Stockport) and three of our Governors (Terry, Alice and Paul) into school for our school improvement day. They spent time with members of the SLT observing classes and seeing the school 'in action'. Positive feedback was received. Lyn made a particular mention about positive communcations between adults and students, students and students and adults with adults. Students were engaged in meaningful learning within the observed lessons and really good examples of classroom practice was observed throughout the day.

This year the sensory department has created a set of mixed classes so students from all classes are joined together to take part in the enhanced curriculum activities- rebound, community visits and a sensory based physio session. During these sessions a group has been taking part in rebound sessions. Rebound sessions are designed for all students to explore, experiment and develop their skills on a trampoline. Since September we are already seeing a weekly build upon of skills and confidence during this session- students have been sitting up and even progressed to standing with support from our specially trained staff. Not only is rebound a great physical session for our young people but the session is a fantastic opportunity for communication skills to be explored to. The students love the close 1:1 time on the trampoline and sessions are the perfect vessel for intensive interaction experiences.

In our English lesson this week the class recreated the story about “The wrong sandwich” . This led on into some creative storytelling of our own!

Forest school area

We extend an extra special thanks to Tarmac who, as part of their community projects, have massively improved accessibility in our forest school area and built us a fantastic new sand area. I'm sure you will agree that the whole area is looking fantastic and we are very grateful to them for the work they have done for us.
