Heaton News - WB 27th February

Date: 2nd Mar 2023 @ 5:04pm

Welcome back everyone to the second half of our spring term! We hope you had a great half term break.

This week our focus is on Work based learning/ Careers. In line with the Preparation for Adulthood outcomes, one of our big focuses as a school is equipping
our students for their future lives – whatever that may look like! Part of this is looking at career’s education and work-based learning in and outside of school.

Accessing communities and work places, near and far, allows us to show what independent living and potential future work looks and feels like, and supports our students to develop the knowledge and skills towards that. Our students visit a wide range of places such as local gyms and healthcentres, parks, cafes, shops, churches and many more as well as getting out and about on public transport.

We encourage the development of employability skills through school-based projects such as cafes, charity events and enterprise activities which give our students further insight into the world of work, working as part of a team and the skills needed to complete tasks successfully.

Post-pandemic we are starting to build links with local organisations and businesses to create external work experience opportunities for those students for whom it is appropriate for. A fantasticexample of this is Mackenzie who had a successful start to his work placement before half term at Handy Ladies - Feeding the Community group - who prepare hot, healthy, home-made meals for those in need in the local community. Mackenzie helped prepare ingredients, pack food containers and help clean and tidy proving himself to be a very valuable and hardworking asset to the already fabulous team who work there. Well done Mackenzie!

Manchester City visit - A selection of students from our sensory groups went to experience the sensory room at Manchester City this week. Another great example of our student accessing the community to widen their experiences in everyday life.
