This week has been Maths week and it has been all about 'subitising.' The students have been encouraged to use their eyes to work out small amounts, instead of counting. Highlights of the week include; making subitising soup in Forest School, a fun relay race with huge inflatable dice in P.E, 10 Black Dots story in English and lots of interactive activities in Maths. Teachers have been their usual wonderful creative selves and invented fun subitising activities in Drama, subitising stop animation in Art and have created subitising recipes in Food Tech. It has been a very successful week, where students have Enjoyed different activities, they have certainly been challenged, many students have achieved some fantastic work and everyone has had the opportunity to celebrate their achievements in a special maths week assembly!
The Speech and Language team write....
Does your child have a paper-based or electronic communication system? What types of words do they have access too? How easy are the words to find? No matter what system they use, it is really important that our young people have access to the vocabulary which is meaningful to them. Take a look at any communication support tools your young people use at home – is there the opportunity to communicate around their favourite places, songs, TV shows, toys and people? We encourage families and the class teams to have a half termly check of the vocabulary available within AAC systems and update the vocabulary in line with our young people’s interest and motivators to support encourage AAC use. If you have any questions about personalising your child system or want help with modelling your child’s AAC please contact the Speech and Language Therapy Team.
