Heaton News - WB 10th October

Date: 14th Oct 2022 @ 1:31pm

October is AAC Awareness month and the focus this year is "show your voice" which here at Heaton we encourage our young people to do all the time!

AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication and is all about providing strategies and communication aids that support or replace someone's speech when they can't rely upon it to communicate. At Heaton we see different AAC in action everyday - Makaton, PECs books, switches, communication apps, eye gaze and communication books to name but a few! We aim to make all our AAC individual to our young people's needs and be personalised so their systems contain vocabulary relevant to them and their lives - whether that's motivating items to request in a PECS book or favoured topics to talk about on a communication app!

Here are some photos of AAC in action and our young people showing their voice:

Lifeskills and independence development is a huge part of the curriculum all the way from KS3 to KS5.  A really good example of this at Cheadle this week is Colin's class (Cheadle KS5) where Mackenzie led a group whilst walking across to Morrisons this week. The group  bought the ingredients needed to make the packed lunches for the Friday Community access group. Students also learn keyskills such as knowing how and where to cross road safely. Kyle's group (KS3) have also been practicing their shopping skills by following instructions and using a shopping list.
