PMLD / Sensory Department and Curriculum

The Sensory department at Heaton school meets the needs of the pupils with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD) and Profound and Multiple Barriers to Learning PMBL). Students access a thematic curriculum that develops key life skills such as communication, understanding of cause and effect and body awareness. Students also have access to an Enhanced Curriculum that offers opportunities to participate in Forest schools, hydrotherapy, rebound and community visits. 

Students in this department are assessed using both H levels and Routes for learning depending upon what is appropriate for each individual learner. 

Staff teams in this department work closely with Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physios and the VI teacher to ensure all the additional needs of the students are met to ensure students are best equipped to learn with appropriate adaptations.
